I’m Running a Marathon on Sunday (and I need your help picking shoes)

Total Miles Run

TOTAL time spent running

Total Pairs of Shoes Worn

Total Toenails Lost

I’m done. Training is done. By the time you read this, I won’t be heading out on a run again before Sunday, when I thought I might pop out and run 26.2 miles. I can’t believe it’s arrived so quickly.

Ready Set Go

I have to tell you, tapering is one weird mind game. I have to keep reminding myself of all the work that’s gone into my training, all the miles, all the hours, just to convince myself I can do this on Sunday. In my head, totally irrationally, my mind is telling me, “You haven’t been running much these last two weeks…what if you’ve lost your edge? What if you’re not as fit as you thought you were?” And then, “Did youΒ reallyΒ run that 21 miles? What if your Garmin was wrong?”

Cray. Cray.

Thankfully I am reminded from my training log, from fellow runners on Twitter and Facebook, from my friends and family, that tapering is just messing with me.

So let’s talk about some important stuff. The OUTFIT.

This is what I’m wearing:

Race outfit

The neon pink tights on the left, with the shirt I spent a long time duct-taping my name onto. If you’re in NYC, look for me!!Β (You can’t miss the tights. Seriously. They’re that bright).

If you’re not in NYC, please download the free iPhone App or the (also free) Android App to track my progress, so you can follow me virtually! All you need is my Bib Number, which is:

27394

Finally, I have a dilemma. I have no idea which shoes to wear. Please, weigh in with your opinions, because I am really up in the air about which pair to run in on Sunday. I’d love some runner feedback. Here are the 3 options:

Which shoes

On the left: Mizuno Wave Rider. PROS: I love these shoes so much. They are uber comfortable and probably one of my favorite pairs of running shoes ever. CONS: I have run a lot of miles in this pair. I’m not saying they’re worn out…I’m just saying they’re close to the max number of miles.

In the middle: Saucony Kinvara. PROS: These are so light. They’re minimalist, so that makes sense, but surprisingly they feel quite cushioned. They are also really comfortable. CONS: While I trained a lot in these shoes, I only ran two long runs, the longest of which was 13 miles, in this pair. I’m a little apprehensive my feet would start hurting.

On the right: Mizuno Wave Inspire. PROS: The newest of the bunch, so the least amount of miles, means they’re fresh for race day. These were comfortable from the first moment I ran in them and I PR’d a half marathon in them. These are also the shoes I rocked for my 21 mile long run. CONS: They feel like the heaviest of the three, almost a little clunky feeling.

So I just have one question for you today:

Which shoes should I wear for the marathon??

  1. I wouldn’t run in the Kinvaras…I have them too and I don’t think I’d find them supportive enough for 26 miles! I do long runs and half marathons in the Wave Riders but if you feel like they’re on the way out, go with the Wave Inspire – even though they feel clunky, you PR’d in a half marathon in them and clunky will probably translate to comfortable around mile 20 or so. πŸ˜‰

    1. Yeah, I think I’m deciding between the Mizunos now – lots of feedback and only one person said Sauconys (he was convincing and is a coach, but I still think they’re too lightweight).

    1. Kim, I took so much time doing the duct tape name!! ha ha. I got really perfectionist about it. πŸ˜‰

  2. Mizuno Wave Riders. Ever since trying my first pair of Mizunos I’ve been in love. Go with the favorites!

  3. I love the neon yellow shoes, but definitely don’t wear them if you think they might hurt.
I would go for the first pair, the ones that are on the brink because they’re so broken in. I bought a pair for my full this year, but ended up going for the pair I had trained in. I love the bright pink pants!

    1. I am so tempted to go for the favorites. I need to really check the tread and make sure they’re ok. Those bright pink pants are ridiculously bright!!

  4. Not the minimalist Carly, if you haven’t run a lot in them…
I would go with the new ones.
BTW I have a question for you: tank top or t-shirt? I will be wearing arm warmers anyway…

    1. Yeah, I don’t think the minimalist are the right shoe. I say tank top – if you’re wearing arm warmers, you’ll be fine. Don’t forget to bring layers to wear at Staten Island in the start villages because it’s going to be COLD on Sunday! 48 degrees is what they’re predicting right now. But once you get going you’ll warm up quickly. When I ran 3 years ago I wore a tshirt and shorts and I wasn’t chilly at all after the first mile. GOOD LUCK!!! πŸ™‚
