Fit Mama Friday - Meet Taylor

On Fit Mama Friday today, Taylor, 29 weeks pregnant with her second child and considered a high risk pregnancy due to May-Thurner syndrome, explains why she feels like working out makes her a better mother. Having had a scary post-birth experience after having her son Will, who is 3 years and 8 months old – complete with surgery and a long recovery period – Taylor now runs for those who can’t. Taylor considers herself a mother first and foremost, but also works full-time outside the home as a school psychologist in the public school system, as well as writing a blog, ‘Miracles of Life’. Married to Austin, they are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Will’s little brother in February next year!Β

So I know you’re a super fit mama – what do you do for your workouts, Taylor? Were you just as active and fit during your first pregnancy?

Well, I haven’t always been a runner, but since I started, I have pretty much stuck to running. Β I add in light weights, yoga and pilates, but they are not my main focus. I remained active throughout my first pregnancy, running up until 33 weeks when I was told to stop due to some preterm labor concerns. Β I thenΒ ellipticaledΒ and swam. Β The entire pregnancy I did light weights and yoga. Β During my current pregnancy I am still running (29 weeks), yoga and light weights.

Fit Mama Friday - Meet Taylor TWO PREGS

You weren’t always a runner – so is fitness and working out new for you, or just running?Β

No, I have always been an active person, from early on in my childhood. I am the girl who wanted to be outside, up in trees, on an adventure instead of cooped up reading a book! I started sports with softball at 5 years old and throughout my educational career played softball, soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross country and then focused on soccer in college. Β Honestly I hated running until I began my “big girl” career and the stress was taking over. Although I was in shape, I was not a runner and was not in running shape. However, this was my outlet, I started running every day as soon as I got home from work and couldn’t run a mile without walking when I started in 2005. Within a year I trained for a 10 mile race, then a half marathon and signed up for my first full marathon in the Spring of 2006. Β I completed it and was hooked, running another in October of 2006. I have now completed 5 marathons, too many half marathons to count, as well as 15K’s, 10Ks, the occasional 5K and my first 30K trail race this past year. The only time I didn’t run was after my son was born and I was unable to do so due to the medical complications of the blood clot in my leg.

You mention the blood clot you had following your first pregnancy – tell me more about your condition, May-Thurner Syndrome. You had to have surgery after Will was born, but this was something you had no idea about until after his birth, is that right?

Yep, it was a crazy ride. Perfect pregnancy, perfect delivery, no signs of anything. Then four days after he was born my leg swelled up and I had a DVT from my hip to my ankle. They diagnosed me withΒ May-Thurner SyndromeΒ because my iliac vein collapsed due to the weight of my uterus. They removed the clot in ICU through surgery but couldn’t open the vein. I have a duplicate vein that does what it can, but the Lovenox shots and high-risk status is to prevent the blood from clotting if the duplicate collapses this time!

That must have been so scary and painful! I’m so sorry you went through that. Since you’re high risk, are you able to work out during this pregnancy?

Actually, due to my medical condition it isΒ betterΒ to stay active and I was in the best running/shape of my life when I got pregnant so this is not a change in activity level for me.

Have you had people voice their concern when they find out you’re high risk and still running and working out?Β

Most people have been positive. Β I still get the occasional looks when I am out running that go straight to my belly! A lot of other women I know are encouraged and inspired to work out by the fact that I do it pregnant. I do have some that question me and ask about my doctor’s thoughts as I am high risk, yet I remind them that it’s better for me to be active with my condition.

So, apart from the obvious difference of knowing about your condition this time around, how has your current pregnancy compared, in terms of how you feel, morning sickness, energy levels and how much you’re working out?

This pregnancy has been much more difficult! Β I feel like I have had all the symptoms I didn’t have with my first. Β My first pregnancy was a breeze, minor nausea and that was about it! Β I had a lot of morning (all day sickness) until about 16 weeks of this one and my energy level was low but came back at about the same point as my first, 16 weeks. Of course this pregnancy I am having to do Lovenox shots every day so that changes things a bit as well.

How soon after your first pregnancy did you resume exercising?Β

I was unable to walk across the house without pain for four weeks due to the damage of the massive DVT in my left leg and the surgery to remove it. However, as soon as I could walk, even with pain, I started daily walks with my son in the stroller after his 7am feeding. Β I started this about three weeks after he was born (with the pain) and progressed without pain within five weeks. I was unable to run for six months due to the swelling in my leg but did run/walks and walked religiously until I built back up to a marathon two years later!

That’s an amazing achievement – congrats! Has your workout schedule changed a lot now you’re pregnant AND have a nearly 4-year-old to look after as well? That must be a time challenge, for sure, especially since you work full-time outside the home.

I work out five days a week, pregnant or not. When not pregnant that involves running, cycling, yoga and light weights with a family hike on the weekends. Β When pregnant, cycling is less frequent and when I do it, I ride on a trainer! Β I am down to running three days a week, yoga three days a week and weights two times a week, as well as a family hike once a week. Β My challenge is definitely my schedule. My son is my focus after work, so we either go together if he wants to go, or I find time when he is asleep, but I am increasingly tired, making it a daily mental battle.

I assume you eat pretty healthily as well, since you’re such a fit mama!

Yes, we are a healthy family, we focus mostly on fresh, whole foods. I am a meat eater! Really the only way my diet changes is not eating the things on the “no” list during pregnancy, other than that I stay healthy and stay away from junk.

As well as it being important to exercise because of your condition, why is fitness so important to you? What are your motivations?

The root reason I work out is for sanity. Β It is my happy place, it is my therapy, my me time (even though my son is usually along either in the stroller or now on his bike). I love the rush from working out, the way it makes me feel healthy, more alert and overall happier. But over the last three years, its impact stretches to my son, he knows I love it and he loves it too. Having been with me since our first walk, he loves to run and be outside and is one of the biggest cheerleaders at local races, running across the finish line with me with a huge smile! I am a better mother when I work out. I am happier, more patient, more enjoyable. My son sees the drive and the enjoyment and he loves it too.

After he was born and I thought I would never run again due to the complications, I now run for those who can’t. I thought I may never run again and now I run for those who can’t but also to inspire those that don’t feel adequate. You don’t have to be fast, we are all on a journey, its about reaching your own goals, not another person’s goals.

Fit Mama Friday - Meet Taylor

I love that mentality – that we all have our own goals and it’s not about making comparisons. Did you have any specific fitness goals for this pregnancy, other than staying active throughout? Are you planning on another marathon post-birth, like you did after you had Will?

My goals for this pregnancy were to run a half marathon (at 24 weeks) and I did. Now it is to stay in motion the rest of the time! Β I am hoping for a much smoother transition after baby #2, no blood clots, no surgery in ICU and a quicker return to running. I have not set any running specific time related goals so as not to be defeated before I start if medical complications arise. However, I will run another marathon, and my ultimate goal is to get faster within my realm of ability when the time is right. I lost all of my pregnancy weight within one week of delivering my son, yet this was only because I was on meal restriction in ICU and was so sick I didn’t hold on to much, so this time I hope to lose it the right way, and stay healthy in any way I can.

    1. Thanks Heidi! Go for it! If you are running and able to keep it up I really feel like a half is a safe distance. I have run walked both but felt good with decent breathing the entire time.

    1. Thanks Ariella! It was a tough ride but worth it to find a joy in every step! We love being outside and feel like this is why our son enjoys it so much as well. I often got questions about how we got him to tolerate the stroller and bike and I feel like that is what he got used to at a very young age! I love that he can be active with us!

    1. Kim you got it, terrifying and so unexpected giving the lack of symptoms and the “good bill of health” throughout pregnancy and at discharge! We are super thankful we made it through! My eyes were opened and I really don’t know that I would appreciate life and running as much as I do now without all of that!

    1. Hey Carla, thank you! He loves it! I have to say it was much easier chasing him on his bike early in the pregnancy, now people probably get a pretty good laugh watching this pregnant woman chasing a child on a bike, he can fly! It is a nice change though to not push the stroller and I swore I wouldn’t get a double stroller since he is older. We are set, single stroller ready for baby and Will on the bike!
