Scenes from a weekend #19

What a lovely weekend! How was yours? I know a few people who ran the NYC Half Marathon yesterday – congrats to Christine, to Gabby, and to Allie, as well as my friends Chris and Jen and Erich! I was so bummed to have not gotten in via the lottery this year. The first and last time I ran the NYC Half was back in 2010, and it was such a great race and fantastic course!

I did get out for a long run yesterday, 10 miles in chilly sunshine! It was one of those runs where you feel like you could go forever:

A few of you have asked what I’m training for – well, you may remember that my big goal for this year is to smash my half marathon PR, by 8 minutes! (Why 8 minutes? Well, it would be 1:45 which sounds like a good number to me). I’m signed up for two half marathons – the Brooklyn Half in May and another one in Vermont in June. I’m not sure which one I’m going to attempt my PR for, but I’ve been putting in the work since last December, with my coach Scott Fishman at Team All American.

What else did the weekend bring? More fun at swimming lessons with my little guy. A lovely brunch with a lot of friends on Saturday – at an Aussie place in Brooklyn!

Scenes from a weekend

Our friends Matt and Steve were both celebrating their 40th birthdays this weekend – Matt and his wife Leslie (who I tried to convince to be on Fit Mama Friday) and their gorgeous son were here visiting from Chicago. They moved there a couple of years ago and as we all gathered for brunch, I realized looking around the room that two years ago, most of us didn’t have kids – it was funny, looking around at all the little ones running around, to realize how much can happen within such a short space of time.

On Saturday night, the whole group and lots of others went out for a big birthday celebration for our friends. It was a good night for Brooklyn babysitters, that’s for sure. So fun to have a night out for a change! Plus, there were some pretty unbelievably good cupcakes involved. πŸ˜‰

Scenes from a weekendAlso, I tried to squeeze as much reading time into my weekend as possible. I’m reading The Goldfinch for book club and it’s hard to put down.

I found the opening so difficult to read, just heart-wrenching, but once I got through that, the story just carries you along with this kind of harrowing, fatalistic quality. I have about 50 pages left and I’ve started trying to read slowly so as to make it last longer.

What did you get up to this weekend?

What are you reading, or what’s on your reading list?

Any racers out there this weekend? Let me know in the comments how you did! πŸ™‚

    1. Hi Sarah! Thanks for visiting. πŸ™‚ Yup, I’m loving getting a good long run in every weekend, it makes me feel like I could ramp up for marathon training whenever I felt like it. πŸ˜‰

  1. I was shouting out to Allie and Christine this weekend! So awesome.
I’m finishing “Beauty Queens” by Libba Bray. Intriguing read.
And the weekend was half good! We had a great birthday party at a butterfly museum on Saturday, followed by a visit to a nearby chocolate store I love, and then a girls’ night out. Sunday morning started with my daughter having a nasty virus. So now we’re just taking care of her – on day 2 of a fever/cough – and hoping the baby doesn’t get it!

    1. Oh man, so sorry your daughter got sick! That is NO fun and I hope baby stays illness-free.

  2. Sounds like an absolutely lovely weekend! I ran my first ever 5k on Saturday. I have never understood the short distance races but I kind of liked it in a weird way. I’m doing a race series that is almost all 5ks through November so I’m sure I’ll be a little sick of the distance by then. What race are you doing in Vermont?

    1. I like 5Ks but there’s so few around here, for some reason. I’m doing the Covered Bridges Half Marathon, it’s one of my favorites. πŸ™‚

    1. On Sunday morning I had the book open on the kitchen counter, reading while I was making pancakes. Ya gotta find time when you can, right? πŸ˜‰
