Scenes from a weekend #32

Most July 4th holidays we’ve spent in the city. It might sound odd, but a great thing about NYC in the summer is that it’s much less crowded than usual on the weekends – so many people get out of town for the weekend that it almost feels like the city empties out and you have the run of the place. This year, though, we decided to join the masses and take a quick break just up the Hudson River, to stay with our cousins for the long weekend.

I love July 4 – fireworks, summertime, barbecues and everyone in a celebratory mood. It may be kind of odd considering I’m from a Commonwealth country still reigned over by the Queen of England, but it’s one of my favorite holidays of the year.

I wasted no time relaxing.

The day of July 4th was a rainy mess. I headed out to do a Vo2 max interval run, to take advantage of the cooler temperature and enjoy the rain during a hot, sweaty run. Then we spent the day checking out the local children’s museum, visited Roman’s great uncle’s train set (so cool!) and played in the house.

The fire truck was (of course!) Roman’s favorite part of the museum. He took a break from it only to whip up a chocolate cake or two in the kitchen.

After the rain on Friday, the rest of the weekend was the most perfect weather. I headed out to the walkway bridge over the Hudson River with my cousin Doug for a 5 mile run. It was gorgeous and so much fun to run with a friend for a change.

We also spent some time at a friend’s pool and Roman had lots of fun with a couple of new friends. πŸ™‚

Without any plans or schedules, we managed to make a long weekend feel like a much longer vacation.

And of course we saw some fireworks. This was the first time Roman had seen fireworks and I was a little apprehensive that he’d be upset by the noise. Luckily, there was a fire truck at the viewing site, so he felt right at home immediately! πŸ˜‰ And then when the show started…it was magical. He was delighted, in awe and thrilled. It was so special to see his little face light up at the sight.

Did you celebrate the holiday weekend?

Fireworks – love them, or meh? I LOVE them. Always have.

Fave summer drink? That’s a fresh watermelon margarita in the first photo and it was pretty awesome. πŸ™‚

  1. I always love fireworks! Never meh.

We had a similar kind of weekend. I love them like that. Originally I had it chock full of stressful plans but once I took them all off the table, the weekend got a nice flow of its own.

  2. Don’t you feel like you get out of the city and it’s just so much more relaxed! It’s amazing what a little time away can do!

I love fireworks! Of course my favorite are the NYE fireworks in Sydney but I love a good ol’ 4th of July firework as much as the next person!

The NYE ones in Sydney are amazing! But really, I love them all. And yes, I feel like a different person as soon as I’m out of the city!
