Scenes from a weekend #42

So if you follow me on Instagram, you probably saw this photo from Thursday, when I decided another playground trip was going to melt my brain, so I took Roman to the Brooklyn Museum.

It was a surprising success. For someone who listens to me 40% of the time, Roman turned out to be a perfect little museum patron. He got that he wasn’t supposed to run, or touch anything and when he discovered something he WAS allowed to touch (the guards would lead us to anything that had buttons for interactive viewing), he was that much more enthralled. On two floors of the museum, there are installations of period houses you can walk into, then look through at the rooms, complete with period furniture, linens, china & decorations and he was FASCINATED.

We planned on a second trip with Daddy for Sunday, which didn’t stop him haranguing me to “go visit my houses with me, Mama!” all day Friday and Saturday.

One of Roman’s many Brooklyn properties.

This is how Roman runs his house tours:

“So Daddy, this is my red house, we can go inside, I’ve left the door open. It’s red. Here are some bricks on this side. In this room I have a fire and I have cups of tea and sit down. Now, let’s go to this room, where I have a piano and so I can sing. And in this room….Mama, what is this room for, again? {Mama: this is your pantry, buddy.} That’s right, Daddy, this is my pantry…okay, now let’s go to another house.”

We had a lot of fun. I think Fran is secretly hoping Roman turns out to be some kind of real estate mogul now. πŸ˜‰

One of my clients grows veggies and herbs out on her fire escape and brought me some tomatoes and basil. I bought some mozzarella from a local Italian deli that makes its own and we were all Caprese, all the time this weekend. I swear, the tomatoes were so good, I’ve never even had better ones from the farmer’s market.

I also followed some of my runner-blogger friends on social media who were running in the New Balance Reach the Beach Relay in New Hampshire. Christine, Allie, Melissa, and Angela all rocked it & it looked like SO much fun! I’ve never done a relay race but now I really, really want to!

And there was some me-time involved this weekend as well. I finally read Gone, Girl and wow. All I knew before I started was that it was about a wife who disappears on her wedding anniversary. That’s it. I won’t ruin it for you if you haven’t read it, because it was so much fun to read it ‘blind’ without knowing any twists. And if you haven’t read it, you should! It’s excellent.

A little solo coffee date and a little solo run never hurt anyone, either.

It’s definitely Autumn weather here – sunny, crisp and clear. I really had forgotten how lovely it is to be outdoors this time of year – it went a long way towards dispelling my change of season malaise.

What’s the last good book you read?

Favorite museum?

Ever run in a relay race?

  1. So the boys were peering over my shoulder as I was reading this and now we’re planning a trip to the museum. Roman’s presence is also requested πŸ™‚ Miles yelled “Mommy he looks just like me!” Too cute…

  2. Pepi Sings a New Song is the best book I’ve read lately. Bless Goodwill finds on sale that are entertaining for toddlers and parents.

Pig Cookies (for adults) has also become a favorite.

On museums, I’m torn between the Reina Sofia, the Andy Warhol, and the National Gallery of Art.

  3. Ok, you’ve convinced me to read Gone, Girl finally. I kept resisting it – I don’t like mysteries – but I DO like a good read, so I’ll track it down.

Best museum I’ve been to is St. Petersburg, Russia’s Hermitage, which is in Winter Palace, where Tsar Nicholas II and his family lived until the monarchy was overthrown. The art is amazing, but so is just walking around this enormous palace! Students from any country were free, so I used to go 1-2 x / week when I was doing archival research there in the summers.
