Here was the big news from my weekend:

Scenes from a weekend #45

After a few weeks of feeling pretty blah, this weekend I felt way better. I actually got out for a glorious run on Sunday afternoon. It was 4 miles, slower than I’m used to, but it wasΒ so good to be back out there. It finally felt like Fall here this weekend and the park is looking gorgeous in its Autumnal colors. And yes, apparently it’s true that you start showing sooner with your second.

More weekend fun – Saturday was rainy and gloomy, but getting a very energetic toddler out of the house for some rampaging is kind of a must. Luckily he thinks rain is super fun (the Thomas the Tank Engine raincoat and fun umbrella help).

I had a lot of kale left from a couple of new recipes I tried this week, so there were lots of kale chips in our weekend. I’d never made them before but they are SO easy and delicious and they went perfectly with a yummy turkey cheddar burger on an Ezekiel english muffin.

Scenes from a weekend #45 One bummer of the weekend was me coming to terms with the fact that I’m not going to make the 9+1 requirement to get guaranteed entry in the NYC Marathon next year (as a NYRR member, if you run 9 of their races and volunteer at one during the calendar year, you have automatic entry to next year’s marathon). I was on track to complete all 9, but the morning sickness & headaches not only stopped me from training, but meant I’ve missed 3 of the races I was signed up for over the past 4 weeks. I’m also going to miss one next weekend since we’ll be away.

I knew it would be iffy whether I’d be up for running 2015, depending on when we got pregnant and how long I’d have to really train, but if you can swallow paying two years in a row to apply, you can defer your guaranteed entry for the following year. The reason I was counting on that as an option was that if I don’t have time to train for a marathon while caring for a newborn and a toddler, there’s also no way I’d be able to run 9 races throughout 2015 to make the 2016 cut.

I know it’s silly and I’m way too tied to the NYC Marathon. Especially because if you add up the money you spend to run 9 NYRR races, plus the cost of the marathon entry, it’s SUPER pricy. (And worth it. But still). Β I think I should find a smaller marathon to run in 2016, where I don’t have to enter a lottery to get a place and try something new.

Do you curl up indoors on a rain day or get outside?

Have you made kale chips? Any spices or seasoning I should try? (I just used salt)

Do you have aΒ Β favorite smaller marathon to recommend?

  1. Yayyy! Glad to hear it! Always feels good to get back out there πŸ™‚ I am sure you will get to the NYC marathon when the time is right, that just means you have more time to prepare, and try out new experiences! As for kale chips, I have a smokehouse maple seasoning from mccormick, that goes wonderfully on kale chips! Most important is to make sure you “massage” the oil into the kale….as silly as that seems (and you feel doing it), it helps!

    1. Great tip on massaging! I drizzled the oil and there were some oily bits and some dry bits. I’ll definitely give it a rubdown next time!

  2. I do like making kale chips. I just use olive oil and salt but I also put some red pepper flakes on them before I bake it. Sometimes I do like rainy days. It gives me an excuse to stay inside and be lazy. Catch up on some Netflix shows.

    1. πŸ™‚ Thanks Marcia! I know, of all the reasons to have to not run a marathon, this one’s the best!

  3. Glad you are feeling better!! I love kale chips. I sometimes put chili powder on mine or chipotle chili powder. It’s a nice little kick!

One of my friends was coming from Oz for this year’s NYC Marathon and she had to pull out because she got preggers. The little bundle of joy is worth it though! πŸ™‚

  4. Rainy day activity depends on the temps and winds. Some days are best for splashing on the beach, others for movies and books, and others for sawing and swimming.

It looks like rainy season will kick off later this week with 7 days of rain.

    1. Exactly! Trying to take advantage of the outdoors while they’re still relatively warm rainy days is key.

    1. Thanks Julie! I know, you really don’t know when you’ll be feeling ready or have the time for training, so it’s hard to plan out. But I think a destination race will be in the future for sure.

  5. I’m so glad you were able to go for a run! That must have felt great. I’m also sorry about the NYC Marathon. I totally get it and I understand what a bummer that is for you. I have a goal of running a marathon once the boys are in school ‘full-time’ which means 2016. I say you and I go to Hawaii and run a lovely marathon there together!…or anywhere else πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks Allie. I know it seems silly to some to be bummed about one race, especially because we are going to be welcoming a brand new human next year, but I still am. Hawaii sounds tempting…

    1. Stomping in puddles is huge here, too! Cumin sounds good for kale chips – I’m definitely going to try!
