The Run Report – realizing I’m not superwoman

Oh hi, running friends! It’s been a while since I last wrote The Run Report, I know. It’s a tough post to write when there hasn’t been a whole lot of running going on…!

The Run Report - realizing I'm not superwoman

Since I was being sneaky and hiding my pregnancy from you guys for a while, I thought I’d go back and take you through how my running has been going throughout the first trimester. This way, it will seem like there’s been a lot of running, at least. πŸ˜‰

4 Weeks Pregnant: I found out I was pregnant pretty much as soon as you possibly can. I felt totally normal, not a symptom in sight and I had EVERYTHING crossed that I was going to have the easiest, most asymptomatic pregnancy ever.

Workouts: 3 x 10 minutes at half marathon pace (with a 20 minute warm up and a 10 minute cool down); an 11 mile long run; two 35 minute easy/recovery runs. Two strength training sessions.

5 Weeks Pregnant: Still feeling fantastic, no nausea, no tiredness, started to suspect I was really, truly going to luck out with a magical pregnancy.

Workouts: Tempo run of 25 minutes at half marathon pace, with a 10 minute warm up and cool down; 12 mile long run; two easy/recovery runs; two strength training sessions; one spin class.

6 Weeks Pregnant: I don’t feel so good.

Workouts: All I did for exercise was my regular walking commute to and from clients 3 days a week (averaging 6 miles each working day) and one online yoga class. This was all I could manage, given my overwhelming nausea. Oh, and spin class with my friend Maggie (because I didn’t want her to guess I was preggo, which she may well have done if I’d cancelled).

7 Weeks Pregnant: The headaches begin. Or, I should say, the headache. Just the one. All the time. Regardless,Β I decided if I was going to feel awful, I should check toΒ see if running made me feel any better.

Workouts: 40 minutes on a stationary bike; 3.5 miles on a treadmill; 3 miles easy outside; 9 miles long run (wore my Garmin, but didn’t check it); 4.5 mile run with some strides thrown in at the end; one spin class. I felt okay while working out, but it wiped me out. I’m used to my workouts giving me energy and this was the opposite.

8 Weeks Pregnant: I decided to work out as I felt like it.

Workouts: 50 Β minutes on an elliptical, with some speed intervals; I went out for a planned run one day, but the up-and-down of running made me feel sick; a couple of strength workouts; one spin class.

From then until now, I’ve been very loosey-goosey with my workouts. I’m walking everywhere, I’m doing weights twice a week, I’ve gone to a spin class nearly every week (spinning surprisingly feels great and is definitely going to be a staple during pregnancy). I’ve really only been outside running a couple of times, with a mile warmup here and there on a treadmill before strength training.

Scenes from a weekend #45

Now, at nearly 14 weeks, I’m feeling okay. I’ll have two days of feeling good, then one day of nausea and a headache. The only thing holding me back now is that I am exhausted all the time. I am also hungry constantly and secretly afraid that my little baby bump may be more cheese and refined carbs than actual baby. (I’m eating healthy as much as I can, but sometimes cheese and crackers are all I think I can stomach).

I am bummed that I had to miss some planned races that would have ensured I had guaranteed entry to next year’s NYC Marathon, but I think I’ll set my sights on a 2016 marathon somewhere new and different and exciting, instead. Allie mentioned Hawaii and I think I could be convinced! πŸ˜‰

That’s my run report and I’m sticking to it.

If you’re wondering where Fit Mama Friday has gone, don’t fear, it will be back! Right now I am out of submissions (sob!) so I am about to reach out to a bunch of fit mamas to see if they’d like to be featured in the series. In the meantime, check out this FAQ post and please share with anyone you think would like to be on Fit Mama Friday. πŸ™‚ In the meantime, you can check out all the archives right here.Β

Mamas, did you run while pregnant? Did you have food cravings or aversions?

Is it gorgeous Autumn weather where you are? We are going apple picking this weekend!

  1. You are doing awesome mama!!! At 14 weeks, you are doing more then most and being very smart about it. Definitely just take it as it comes and be grateful you can walk everywhere! I can relate to the ONE headache. I had it for weeks with the twins and I thought I would die. I also used spin as my go-to class (and swimming) and was able to spin until my belly prevented me from reaching the handlebars. I don’t think you will have that issue. πŸ™‚ Can’t wait to see you and your adorable baby bump!!

    1. ‘Adorable’ is a stretch. Right now I am deep in my regular clothes don’t fit right but my maternity stuff is tent-like land. Oof.

    1. Exactly! Luckily the ratio of good to bad is swinging in feeling good’s favor now. πŸ™‚

  2. I think that as a pregnant runner the best thing to do is listen carefully to what your body is telling you, which is just what you are doing. There’s only so much energy to go around when making a baby! I was pretty lucky to be able to run through both my pregnancies, but they were slow, short, and very easy. Keep up the great job!

    1. Thanks Amanda! I won’t be breaking any land speed records, that’s for sure, but I loved running through my first and am hoping to do the same this time.

  3. With this first trimester, I had no appetite. When I was hungry, I wanted Swedish fish. Bizarre for me.

The second and third trimesters have been better food-wise, even with some of my choices and all of our travel.

This weekend I hope we can work outside. I sawed for 3 hours on Wednesday after a 2000 swim. I have big yard dreams to make reality before E is born in 6 weeks or before.

    1. That sounds an awful lot like nesting, Wendy! πŸ™‚ I remember having lots of energy late in my first pregnancy – it felt so good to do a lot again!

    1. Funnily enough, YOU are one of the mamas I’m reaching out to! I’ll email you this week. πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks Nellie! I definitely am having on days and off days, so I’m trying to do what I can when I can. Not worrying too much, though – just listening to what my body is telling me. πŸ™‚

  4. I can totally relate to the way you were feeling early on. The first indications of preggo for me were my runs sucked. Like somebody else was sapping my energy. Oh wait there was!
You are wise to listen to your body/baby. : )

    1. That’s how I figured out I was pregnant the first time around, with Roman! My racing was slower, but felt as hard as a PR.

  5. You’re doing great! Some days all I could manage was 20 minutes of yoga although I generally found that moving helped me feel less sick. You’ve been doing so many kick butt workouts! There is no way I could do a spin class. I feel like I’m going to be sick in those classes when I’m not pregnant. Haha!

And I ate a ton of guac and chips for dinner my first tri! Oh well.

  6. Fun to read about your progression and workouts!
Glad that you are feeling somewhat better – hope the headache is gone!!!
I ran while pregnant but my 2nd pregnancy was rough – there were days that the only thing I ate was Cheetos because everything else made me sick (healthy, right???).
Hopefully the rest of your pregnancy you will feel great!

    1. The Cheetos thing oddly makes me feel so much better that my eating habits have been pretty crappy!

  7. Like you, I felt ok until about 6 weeks. Then I was barf-city until about 14 weeks. So my workouts were mostly slow walks around the neighborhood, since fresh air eased the nausea. I couldn’t stand foods I normally love, and wanted things I usually don’t care about, like cereal. But by 16 weeks I was feeling good again, and by 20 I felt like I was exercising and eating normally. Hang in there!

    1. I briefly stopped by Barf City a few times, but ended up settling down in Constant Nauseaville, which is nearby. In the process of moving again, now, happily.

    1. First trimesters are definitely not my jam, either! Hoping this one gets better like the last time!

    1. Spinning has been great! I’m easing back into running properly this week, but will definitely be listening to my body. I totally get what you mean about not feeling fit enough to go back in the 2nd trimester – I’m hoping as active as I’ve tried to be will help make it an easy transition.
