Fine Fit Pregnancy – Third Trimester

Fine Fit Pregnancy - Third Trimester. My thoughts going into the 3rd trimester of my second pregnancy. How I'm doing with pregnancy workouts, what healthy recipes I'm trying, how I'm dealing with a toddler while pregnant (hint: the toddler part is proving the trickiest...!)

This pregnancy is flying by. I remember when I was pregnant the first time and it felt like I was pregnant for.ev.er. Last week, I hit the third trimester and thought, “How did that roll around so quickly?” I definitely feel way more pregnant than I wasΒ when I gave you the halfway there update, but I’m not waddling…yet.

The Bump

Fine Fit Pregnancy - Third Trimester Bump Watch

Bump is getting big! And oh man, baby is moving around in there as well. While I don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl, I do know that it seems to think sleep is for suckers. Honestly, every time I think to myself, “Oh, I think baby is actually asleep now,” I’m treated to a nice sharp kick to assure me it was just a cat nap.

I’m in all maternity clothes all the time now – I even packed away all my non-maternity clothes so I don’t have to dig through them to find something to wear. Still sticking with regular tights for working out, but I caved at about 26 weeks and bought a few maternity workout tops – SO glad I did! (PS: Thank you Old Navy for your super affordable maternity clothes! I don’t know what I’d do without them).

The Workouts

Fine Fit Pregnancy - Third Trimester Workouts

I have been loving my workouts. Like I shared in my last Run Report, I am just taking each run at a time and enjoying the wonderful ones when they happen. Recently, they’ve been mostly treadmill runs, partially because of the weather and partially because of timing, but even on the treadmill I have been feeling good. Lots of walk breaks, that’s for sure, but there’s no stress relief like running stress relief, right?

I’ve been trying to get to prenatal yoga every week, which has been awesome. I think part of why I love it is justΒ being one of many pregnant women working out – it’s good to have thatΒ support system.

In terms of strength training, I’ve been doing weights at the gym about twice a week and also doing some workouts at home as well, which has been a great way to sneak in some extra exercise on the days I don’t have childcare.

Is it strange that the hardest workout for me has been my walking to and from clients? It’s when I feel most uncomfortable, most aware that baby is pressing more against my lungs, more aware of the extra weight on my legs.

The Food

Fine Fit Pregnancy - Third Trimester Food

I have been cooking so much! This year I decided to really commit to meal planning for the week and then shopping just for that week. It’s been working great and I’ve also been able to cook in bulk and freeze leftovers to save some time cooking as well. I’ve been on a bit of a soup kick most recently – split pea soup (thank you, Barefoot Contessa), the easiest potato and leek soup ever (courtesy of Julia Childs via Pop Sugar) and an amazing beef stew (from one of my favorite recipe sites, Eating Well).

I’ve also been planning snacks out and baking mini-muffins has become another regular ritual. I tried out Lindsay from The Lean Green Bean’s zucchini carrot apple muffins recipe, which I tweaked a little to add raisins and chia seeds and make them mini, as well as banana walnut chocolate chip mini muffins.

Craving all eggs all the time has not changed, either! πŸ˜‰

The Sleep

My sleep has not changed since my 20 week update – I get tired early, then Β get a second wind and go to bed late. I have been trying to nap more on the weekends, though.

The Everything Else

I am getting excited! It’s just sort of hit me that very soon there will be a new little one in our lives! This past weekend I went through ALL of the old baby clothes I had stored as Roman outgrew them (and by “stored” I mean in boxes piled up in various parts of our bedroom. It was actually a good time to do it – for the first year of having Roman, I was so weepy and sentimental and hormonal about every little thing he outgrew that I just kept everything. Now, I was able to go through it ruthlessly and get rid of stuff I wasn’t crazy about, or anything that was stained (even if I loved it). The next step is rearranging our bedroom to makeΒ room for Roman’s toddler bed, so we can get another crib in here. (It’s going to be tight quarters in Brooklyn for us for a while, that’s for sure!). This rearrangement requires me to do the same sort of cull of myΒ ridiculously large collection of books, which is going to be WAY harder than the clothes purge. Getting rid of books is excruciating for me.

I’ve also been spending more time on Pinterest, pinning more to my pregnancy board, my baby board and my parenting board. Sometimes I forget what a relatively new concept Pinterest is – it’s such a genius idea! Pin now, read later, all in one place.

I’m definitely feeling more winded and need to focus on my breathing now I’m in the home stretch. I’m carrying this baby high, so there’s definitely more pressure on my lungs and diaphragm. Yoga has helped with that, a lot.

Having a nearly-three year old while pregnant is not for the faint of heart. Roman is pushing every one of my buttons recently and seems intent on proving that there’s no such thing as “terrible twos”, which you find out once this horrendous thirdΒ year begins. I remember when I was pregnant with Roman visiting a friend whose daughter was three at the time. My friend was at her wits end one day and said to us, “Wait until three. It’s awful. Enjoy every second until three, so you can remember that you love them.” I thought she was joking. Now I’m not so sure. πŸ˜‰

I’m planning on training clients up until the day I go into labor and in terms of blogging, I need to sit down and plan out a schedule for some guest posts for when I have baby, so I can have maximum snuggle time with the little one. This also means I need to start contacting all my bloggy friends to see if they will contribute! (Watch out for an email from me, friends!). Fun fact: my computer autocorrects “bloggy” to “bloody”.

So that’s the pregnancy so far – I’m sure I’ll do one more update when I’m so far along I need to roll myself over to the computer. That should be a fun post! “So pregnant. So cranky. So huge. The end!” πŸ˜‰

Do you get attached to books and find it hard to get rid of them? Or is it something else that’s hard to part withΒ for you?

Who has some great, healthy recipes pinned? Leave your Pinterest profile in the comments so I can follow you and get more meal ideas!

Can some mamas just chime in and tell me that the terrible threes end a couple of months after the third birthday? Please?? (even if you lie, at least then I can cling to false hope).

    1. Thanks, lady! I still have ‘off’ days, that’s for sure, but I’m making such an effort to stay super-active throughout this pregnancy. I suspect if I didn’t, I would just collapse into exhaustion.

    1. Old Navy is amazing for maternity stuff! I actually think their maternity clothes are better quality than their regular clothes, too. This one I’m growing seems to be on a real schedule, which I don’t remember from the first pregnancy, too. Frighteningly, part of its schedule is to wake up around 10pm and go crazy for at least 3 hours…. ruh roh!!

  1. You look so great mamma! I can’t wait to find out if your little one is a he or she! It’s so exciting. I am so impressed with all your workouts and food prepping. It gives me hope that when my little nugget gets a bit older I’ll be a bit more organized! πŸ™‚

    I love following your journey!

    1. You know, I rarely used to meal plan or food prep, so I don’t know if it’s some weird sort of nesting thing, but I feel SO organized when it comes to cooking and eating these days!! I’ll have to do lots of freezer meals towards the very end, because I don’t foresee this level of organization lasting once I’m a mama of two!

  2. You are looking fabulous! It’s so true that the second pregnancy goes by quicker because you are busier with another child and not just concentrating on the pregnancy. You’re workouts are impressive and I love all the cooking that you are doing. I could hardly be in the kitchen during my pregnancies! I have pinned all the soup recipes because they look fantastic.

    1. Those soups were SO good! The Julia Childs/popsugar one I didn’t add the lemon juice (which is, I suspect, the only way it differs from Julia’s original recipe) and it was just as amazing. And the beef stew they specifically tell you to use brown beer and NOT to use stout, but I totally used Guinness and it was delicious.

  3. I am amazed by your energy, especially cooking! I loved seeing all the healthy foods though… it’s motivating! There may be terrible threes or fours but it doesn’t last long and it may be even worse when bubba arrives. just think…. little kids, little problems… big kids, bigger problems! That was told to me by my SIL and although my kids are not that old just yet my usually dramatic, high maintenance middle child is fantastic right now and my 1st grader suddenly started with this teenager like attitude and I am just shocked… I thought I had more years before that lol. Are you planning to move to a bigger place in Brooklyn? Good luck this last trimester! x

    1. Thanks Tamara! We are going to stick it out here for a while, mainly because we LOVE our location so much. We’re so close to the park and the subway and just in a really cute neighborhood with lots of great neighbors. Hopefully we can make it work for a while longer without having to make a move! And yes, the idea that his little temper tantrums may become more “pronounced” when baby arrives has definitely occurred to me….god help me! πŸ˜‰

    1. They were great – I actually made them partially to get zucchini into my green-veggie-refusing toddler! ha ha

  4. I love your updates on pregnancy!!
Good luck with the rearranging!! I can tell you that my oldest son never went through a terrible stage and my youngest – it was brutal when he was 3. The good news is that at 13 (even at 4 & 5) no one who knows him believes me when I talk about how rough that time was. Hang in there!!!

    1. Lucky I am in nesting mode so the rearranging and organizing is less arduous than it normally would feel! That actually makes me feel way better that only one of your boys went through this terrible three stage – maybe the second kid won’t be as awful in 3 years!!

  5. You look and sound so wonderful! I’m so glad you’re enjoying this pregnancy and are getting excited. When I was pregnant with the twins I ate SO many eggs too…and now Vaughn is allergic to them and Miles hates them. WTH?? I can also tell you that when the boys were 3 I almost lost what was left of my mind. I think it may actually help you to be welcoming a newborn during this ugly age!!! Don’t worry, your sweet boy will return at 4!

    1. I DO NOT know how you did three years old with two of them at once. I am stunned you didn’t totally lose your mind. Bring on 4!! (we’re still a week off him even turning 3 though, so I’m kind of screwed.)

  6. You look great! So impressed you are able to deal with a 3 year old, work, and get some good workouts in! I am still struggling on the workout front mostly due to constant Braxton Hicks – so not fun! Let’s hope these next couple weeks fly by too and healthy babies come fast!

    1. Oh man, sorry you’re dealing with Braxton Hicks! I never had that, but a girlfriend who was pregnant at the same time as me had them from about 22 weeks onwards and they were rough. You just do what you can and don’t worry too much, mama-to-be! πŸ™‚

    1. Thanks lady! I’m making a concerted effort to be kind to myself and just do what I can. As long as I’m still enjoying running, I’m going to keep it going!!
