Scenes from a weekend

Scenes from a weekend #12

What did you get up to this weekend? We had lots going on! After a laid-back Friday night, watching Captain Phillips (which was great), Saturday was Roman’s first swimming lesson since the summer! I wasn’t sure how he was going to be in the pool – the last time we took a block of lessons, it was hit or miss. One day he’d love it, then the next week he’d decide it was some sort of torture we’d especially devised.

I was SO relieved he loved every minute! Particularly because Fran had an appointment so I was solo for our swim adventure – hence no photos. I had my hands full!

We got home and headed to brunch with some friends we haven’t seen in ages. It was delicious and great company.

Saturday night we went to a party! We haven’t had an evening amongst adults only for a while, so it was a lot of fun. I mentioned before that I was invited to join a book club this year – this party was to celebrate its 5th anniversary. This is the first time I’ve ever been in a book club, which is odd, given that I love their two most important components – books and wine. I do have to do a little speed-reading to get through the end of our first book, The Luminaries, before we meet, though…

Sunday was laid-back. Fran went into the city to play drums and Roman and I made a castle/train/house/airplane/rocketship from foam letters and numbers. You know, typical Sunday morning. We did head out for a little bit, but since it’s so cold, we’re kind of limited in places to go play.

Once Fran was home and Roman was napping, I headed to the gym to run. I have logged more miles on the treadmill this winter than I think I have in the past 3 years combined. If I had a shorted workout I would have used the track, but it’s only a 200 meter track, so for longer runs it’s not ideal.

You know I’m not really a fanΒ of the treadmill. Having TV made it somewhat better, though.

(Sidenote, since I don’t want to spend a whole post complaining, but WHEN is this Winter going to END???! I want to run outside comfortably. It would be lovely to leave the house without wearing seven layers. That little groundhog is popping out of his hole soon, right? He better not see his shadow.)

Sunday was also Australia Day! Roman and I had an Aussie brekky of Vegemite toast:

Fran did not partake because he finds Vegemite horrifying. That was about all we did to celebrate, I’m afraid. A friend on Twitter did let me know that the Empire State Building was lit up green & gold for the occasion, though, which is cool! Apparently it was all Hugh Jackman’s idea. No, really!!

So what did you do this weekend?

Non-Aussies, have you tried Vegemite and did you like it?

Have you ever been in a book club?

  1. I’ve spent a lot of time on the dreadmill this winter too. Ugh! I did get outside this morning for a quick run. The temps are supposed to drop dangerously low for the next three days, so I knew I wouldn’t have many more chances until the weekend. Sigh. I’ve never tried Vegemite. I’m up for anything once!

    1. If you try Vegemite, I want to hear what you think! Looks like this weekend in NYC will be great for running – mid-40s, a heatwave!!

    1. Pretty sure you wouldn’t like it – apparently you need to give it to a baby before 2 years old so they learn the taste!! (Roman was getting some at 6 months, gotta keep the Aussie in him!)

  2. I lived in the UK and oh how the Brits love their Vegemite! I was a single parent for some of the weekend and took the kids out for donuts. I love donuts but haven’t had any in eons. Wow it made my tummy hurt!
    Yay for Roman loving swimming!

    1. Swimming lessons are SO fun!! Also, I may be the only person in the world who isn’t a big fan of donuts, even though I have a sweet tooth.

    1. I don’t think you’re really supposed to be able to buy it here, because it’s a fermented product (or something like that). Anyway, my mother in law found it in a tiny store in VT and stocks up for me!
