Scenes from a weekend #15

We don’t really do Valentine’s Day in our house. The closest we got was me buying stickers to make this fun “card” with Roman (who stuck heart stickers on about every surface other than the easel):

valentines day

I don’t really get the holiday – it seems a little forced, not to mention a huge source of stress for people who’ve just begun dating when February 14 rolls around! πŸ˜‰

Our weekend was laid-back once more. Despite the snow on Saturday, the fact that it was above freezing meant I decided to take my long run outdoors, rather than face the treadmill again.

winter run

It was breathtakingly beautiful, but pretty slow-going, thanks to the wind and the constant snowfall. It felt good to be outdoors though. Me and another runner had a little cheer and jumped around a bit when the snow plow came by to give us a fresh track to run on. Nothing like extreme weather to form a bond among runners!

The snow didn’t stop any of us – our little family of three went out Saturday night to get dinner out in the neighborhood. Roman is entranced by the snow. He calls it “ice rain”.

Sunday brought a welcome surprise in the way of a gift from one of my clients who spends the winter in California (like any sane person is wishing they did about now!). Fresh citrus from her backyard, along with some grapefruit moonshine she made (actually, she based it on a Limoncello recipe).

I made a yummy Thai curry last night – all I’m craving these days are soups and spicy dishes. It’s like a cry for help – we need warmth here in the Northeast! (In fact, the majority of the country is well and truly over winter).

And you KNOW we tried that moonshine. We sipped it while watching Downton Abbey and snuggling with fur babies. It was delicious. πŸ™‚

  1. So sweet of your client to give you the goodness from California!!!
My go-to in the cold is always a hearty soup – last night I made Pork and Wild Rice Soup and it hit the spot!!!
I’m with you – I don’t buy into Valentine’s Day – the commercialism is a bit over the top!

    1. You know when an Aussie is saying just above freezing is warm, there’s a massive problem, right? πŸ˜‰

    1. Plus you can make a huge amount and freeze some for when you can’t be bothered cooking. I’m such a soup fan!
