The Run Report – Helicopter Accident Recovery

Okay, I’m not trying to make light of helicopter accidents, I’m really not. In fact, every time I hear or read about some kind of horrific incident involving a propeller and someone exiting a chopper, it occurs to me how frighteningly easy that would be to happen. Soooo….now you have that delightful thought in your head (you’re welcome!) let’s get to The Run Report, shall we?

The Run Report - Helicopter Accident Recovery

If you missed the post where I mentioned I stepped on a toy helicopter and it took a chunk out of the ball of my foot, I can understand why that intro may not have made sense. It happened about 10 days ago, I took a week off running and then I ran on the weekend – pain-free – so YAY! I’m healed.

Apart from it hurting, the worst part about it was knowing I was compensating when I was walking: kind of rolling my foot in a different direction to try to take weight off the ball. During my week off running I made sure I did a lot of foam rolling to try to loosen up the muscles being overworked from changing my gait. It seems to have worked okay – I had no issues during yoga on Friday and everything feels pretty normal.

Where my body is at:

The Run Report - Helicopter Accident RecoveryIt’s no secret that pregnancy does a number on your body. What with the weight gain and the extra blood volume and the crappy sleep, unsurprisingly my pace has been affected. That part doesn’t bother me so much, it’s more that the extra huffing and puffing I’m doing while running makes me think I’m cardiovascularly unfit. I’ve been making a conscious effort to remember all the pregnancy factors that make working out a little bit harder, so I can just let that go.

Workout clothes are getting a little trickier. I’ve bought a few cheap tops in a larger size to fit the bump for now, but pretty soon I’ll be purchasing some dedicated maternity workout wear, since I’m just about halfway along now. Just like last time I was pregnant, my Lululemon tights have been amazing – they are still comfortable and all I do is scrunch down the front waistband a little, so bumpy can hang out (literally) over top. The awesome thing I remember from last time is that after I had Roman and was back to pre-pregnancy size, I wore them again and there was no stretching issue at all. That luon stuff they use is magic.

Sleep is sucking. I get tired early, then get a second wind and stay up too late and when I’m actually in bed, I’m tossing and turning for a while. I shared this post by Christine on yoga poses for sleep on twitter and I need to start using these as a bedtime routine, I think.

Where my mind and heart are at:

Maybe it’s hormones, maybe it’s the aforementioned crappy sleep, but I’ve been a bit cranky lately. Just ask my husband! 🙂 Especially this last week and then it clicked when I was out running in the evening this weekend how much I’d missed my runs for therapeutic benefits. I came back a much calmer, happier version of me.

The Run Report - Helicopter Accident RecoveryWhat especially helped was that realizing my Garmin was dead – 0% battery dead –  when I was on my way out the door. So I just went without. I noted the time when I left and still followed what the workout was (15 minutes easy, 15 minutes medium, 15 minutes medium-hard effort) then just mapped out my route to get mileage when I got home. Running totally on perceived effort, I managed an overall 9:26 pace. No idea what my splits were, but that’s right around what I ran overall when I did the same workout split into three 10 minute segments last week.

I think I will be doing that more often during pregnancy – forgetting the splits and the paces to hit and just running by effort. I enjoy more about the actual run when I do it without technology and it’s a good chance for me to check in with my body and make sure I feel comfortable.

I’m having some bonding with this little growing muffin – I can feel his or her movements a lot more recently and I’m getting excited (already!) for the moment I meet the little one.

Something I miss, though, is training for a specific running goal and having that event to work toward. After spectating at the NYC Marathon, I got excited thinking about plans for racing post-baby. Even though that’s a long way off, it helps me when I’m working out now to think about the fact that I’m building up a base for that future goal. 🙂 Oh, and if you want to read some great recaps from the marathon, check out the post from Gabrielle from Marathons & Macarons (it was her first marathon!), Michele from NYC Running Mama‘s recap about what it was like to lead a friend through the race, Marcia from Marcia’s Healthy Slice recounting what it’s like to run a bucket list race, and then watch Eric from Dirty Old Sneakers‘ video post (he runs with a GoPro). Eric became a first-time father just days before the marathon too!

Are you a fan of running by effort rather than knowing your pace? Or does it drive you crazy?

Do you get grumpy if you’re out of commission from an injury? (I’m so thankful it was only a week.)

Do you have a bucket list race?

  1. Blah helicopters are dangerous! Thanks for the race recap shout. Actually Eric’s tips for navigating NYC ie the ferry, etc were fantastic. I think running by effort right now is perfect for you. I do it sporadically. There’s much to be said for letting the pace monkey go once in awhile. Yay for growing bump!

    1. You had a great race! I loved reading all the recaps, it’s such a special race to run. Eric is great, he’s a great source of info for NY racing! He’s the social media correspondent for NYRR, too.

  2. Ouchie! That sounds painful! Sorry to hear that, I fell onto a pencil once…..went right into my foot about an inch…..was not fun, and of course had to take a few days off.

Its funny you said about your garmin dying, and now running without it. I am doing that too, have not run with mine once since chicago, and I think it is definitely better for the time being, gets you focused on the right things, rather than obsessing with pace and distance.

    1. It’s such a sucky place to get hurt because you can’t truly rest it! Love that you’ve been running without the Garmin too – it’s nice to do once in a while.

  3. Last year I was cleaning my bathroom and the shower door came off its hinges and fell on my foot! I ended up having to take a week off running for that but luckily it wasn’t broken! I am addicted to my looking at my garmin, but I have been trying to learn to run off of effort more and sometimes I will leave the watch at home.

  4. So glad to hear the foot is healed! I’ve been super cranky too and I’m definitely not pregnant, so I think it has to do with the seasons changing. It’s a good thing to blame it on, anyway 🙂
As for your running, I think you should really try to enjoy it. You will have the rest of your life to run paces and races but you may not be pregnant again. I know it’s easy for me to say, but really, once you’re out trying to hit splits again you may long for the days of a nice easy pace while growing a human!

    1. Thanks lady. Sometimes I just need the reminder that it’s okay to take it a little easier on myself and not beat myself up. I feel like season changes are hard for everyone!!

  5. The majority of my training is done through effort. When I go out for easy runs I just bring my stopwatch with, I don’t even record the actual distance traveled. I figure, running slower is hard to do and it’s tempting to speed up when you see that slower pace, but the point of an easy run is to run easy, and that also changes depending on the day.

    1. For easy runs I was getting much better about not checking my pace and trying to go by effort, before I got pregnant. I totally agree that running slower is hard to do – runners are all about the numbers and improvements and PRs and sometimes we forget that all that good stuff happens because we do things like easy runs and rest days to let our bodies recover and get stronger.

  6. I’m happy to hear that lulu pants don’t stretch because I’ve been wearing them my whole pregnancy! I find that if I keep the band low it works ok.

The extra blood is killing me. I have been trying to walk a lot but the blood in my legs actually makes them hurt. It’s so awful.

I’m the same way as you in terms of being, tired, second wind etc. It’s the worst! You are looking great though! I can’t believe you are halfway!

    1. I am still wearing some Lulu pants that I had before I was pregnant with Roman, wore all through that pregnancy, then again when I went back to work/working out postpartum, all the way through to this pregnancy! I gave them the ultimate acid test – worth every expensive dollar, because they truly never felt the slightest out of shape. (Even when I did – HA!)

  7. I have found that perceived effort doesn’t equal pace for me this pregnancy. There have been swims that I felt were slow, but in reality were the same pace overall.

In fact, during today’s last swim before E is born, my overall pace was the same as it has been for the entire third trimester.

I’m just grateful my muscles support me and our growing daughter within.

    1. That’s really interesting, Wendy! There were a few times this past training season when I was attacking my half PR when I would run by effort and found the pace was comparable on days a run felt hard and when it felt easy. Gives credence to the idea of certain workouts being very much a mental sport as well, right?

  8. I am now not certain where you’re getting your information, however great topic.
I needs to spend some time studying more or working out more.
Thanks for great info I was searching for this information for my

  9. Traffic volume, whether it existed in any way, slows with a
crawl. Potentially valuable customers never have any idea you
happen to be there. It’s something I enjoy that I’d
also love to support myself with one day. While many individuals will accidentally find your

  10. Anyway, the movie takes place in 2013 and focuses on the family that lives in a
brand new (and impossibly attractive) dwelling that, as we
study around halfway by, was built on the spot the place Katie and Kristy’s
dwelling was, before it burned down.

  12. I accomplished their FREE Marketing Online Course (or one thing like that), and
