Scenes from a weekend #31

How was your weekend? I volunteered yesterday at the Achilles 5 mile race in Central Park. It was a lot of fun – I was on bagel handing-out duty – but it wiped me out! It was about four hours of set up and then the mad rush of all the runners coming through after finishing. First we saw the wheelchair racers, then the elite able-bodied runners. I chatted with the male winner – he thought his time of 24 minutes and change was ‘slow’.

I had so much fun congratulating all the runners as they came by to grab bagels and loved getting to know some of my fellow volunteers. We talked about races and marathons and injuries and training – normal runner conversation. πŸ˜‰ I didn’t take any photos during my shift because we were busy the whole time!

Saturday morning I got up early and did an interval run. It is well and truly summer in NYC now – as soon as the sun heats up around 8am, it’s tough to hit fast paces.

We also did a lot of playground visiting and hung with some friends in Prospect Park on Saturday afternoon.

I had fun checking out all my friends’ photos and updates from the Fitbloggin conference in Savannah. So sad I wasn’t able to make it – I’m planning on going to next year for sure! I can’t wait to read all the recaps on the blogs this week.

Roman was starting to look shaggy, so we buzzed him again to give him a fresh mohawk for the 4th!

I also drew the winners of my Bondi Band Giveaway! Congratulations to Annie from Strong Brees, Allie from Vita Train 4 Life, and reader Karenann! πŸ™‚ Your Bondi Bands will be heading out this week, ladies. Congrats and enjoy! πŸ™‚

Have you ever volunteered at a race?

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever won in a contest?

Any fun plans for the 4th of July holiday?

Happy 4th of July week, friend!
P.S I have decided this week that if I don’t get into NYCM next year, I am totally going the charity route! I’m already excited! πŸ˜€

YAY!! Can’t wait to meet you next Nov!! It’s just the most amazing race, Heidi. You will be blown away. Oh, and do hill training for that terrible Queensboro bridge hill around mile 15. πŸ˜‰

  2. I am beyond excited about my WIN!!!! I emailed you (twice) so I hope you got at least one of them πŸ™‚
I love the mohawk – so very cool, and I love that you volunteered for a race. I have yet to do it but it’s on “the list.”
I’ll have to chat with you about FitBloggin 2015. It’s going to be in Denver!

I got it and I emailed you back! πŸ™‚ Yay!! Volunteering was really fun – I’ve done it a few times in the past, but this was the first time I got to do the post finish bagel hand out, and it was just so great to see all the runners right after finishing. Inspiring x about 5,000!

  3. Thats awesome, I am seeng a lot more people volunteering (well, that I know anyway), and it makes me curious. i have heard it is very rewarding, and you proved that! The eternal issue of counter space in NYC apartments, right? πŸ˜‰ I’m definitely considering heading to Denver next year.

  4. 24 minutes slow for a 5 mile?! Wow!!! Sounds like a super fun (and tiring) experience!!!
    I love Roman’s mohawk!!!

It was really fun and I loved getting to see & talk to some of the elites!! πŸ™‚

  5. Sounds like a good weekend. I’ve never volunteered at a race. Maybe after I get a few more where I’m actually running under my belt. Congrats to the winner!

I think my best win was a boat load of Kind Bars that I won. It took me four months to eat them all. Yum!
