If you saw my photos from Instagram this weekend, you know we went on a little out-of-the-city adventure, which involved apple picking and a pumpkin patch:
The apple picking was so much fun – I had never done it before, but I think it will have to be a yearly tradition for us. Although I was concerned we would never pry Roman loose from this tractor near the orchard entrance, once we set off with our bags, he was on a mission. There were lots of apple snacks throughout the weekend and we brought a bunch home with us, too.
We went up to visit Grandma, who was staying with family in NY state. Fran had the Monday off, so we made a long weekend out of it.
Roman adores Grandma! He gives her some pretty awesome hugs and kisses and loves spending time with her. Grandma had organized a big family get-together on Sunday, which was a lovely day (after our rainy apple picking Saturday). We even saw some wild turkeys and a couple of fawns out in the yard!
Β Roman had fun playing in his Great Uncle’s fishing boat, with us and his cousin Cat:
And the little red tricycle was the hit of the afternoon. He waited patiently to play with it, had a little mishap falling off the back (he doesn’t have a good track record with red toys with wheels, apparently), then finally got to have a turn.
And there was chocolate. Chocolate frosted cupcake at the party, then some much-enjoyed chocolate ice-cream on one of the nights we went out for dinner.
I brought a camera along, which I didn’t end up using, because I actually think my iPhone takes better pictures (the camera is a pretty old point-and-shoot). Roman, however, felt like such a big boy being allowed to use it and take his own photos. It definitely came in handy when we went out to dinner to keep him occupied. π So here are the highlights from Roman’s photo shoots this weekend. As you can see, he mastered the selfie-in-the-mirror genre, as well as the all-important food shot!
I knew a few people running the Chicago marathon this weekend, so I spent some time tracking runners and seeing how everyone did. That might be a bit of a bucket list marathon for me – I LOVE Chicago and it would be a fun place to have a little mini-vacation after a big race. Congratulations to Tina on her PR and to Angie, awesome mama-marathoner!
I was wiped out when we got back. I have a big week this week, with work and FitBlogNYC on Thursday (yay!), so I enjoyed every moment of a post-trip nap yesterday afternoon.
Have you been apple picking before?
Who else ran the Chicago marathon this weekend? Or has run Chicago?
I loved seeing all your picking pics on FB and Instagram! Love that Roman gets to use the camera- nicely done!! I was trying to enjoy my weekend too since this week is going to be a little nutty. Can’t wait to see you though…and maybe we can plot a Chicago marathon together! I love that city and would love to run it someday…

So excited to see you!!! And I am IN for Chicago, I really love that city – any excuse to visit!
So glad you enjoyed apple picking, it is so much fun, as was the chocolate frosted cupcake apparently π
Thanks so much for the shout out. I will have my recap up tomorrow. Your support means so much Carly, I need friends at this time, to keep things in perspective, you are right, it was still a PR!!!

Yup, a PR counts! I know how it feels to have a goal and not get there, but I have no doubt you’ll hit the times you want soon. Hope you’re enjoying some chocolate frosted cupcakes, too! π
I ADORE fall so stinkin’ much! WOW! These pictures are awesome; they make me feel so at-home…through your bloggie…does that make sense? π

It makes total sense! π it was such a lovely weekend – I should have taken tree photos, though!!
Sounds like a fun weekend. I have never been apple picking. I would love to run Chicago marathon one day ad well. I’ve heard it’s a great flat course.

It was a lot of fun, Lacey! I’d love to run Chicago, too.
My nephew Hays loves to play with my camera when we get together. At my Poppa’s funeral I ended up with 100s of pictures of people from the knees down.

Oh, that’s priceless!! It’s so funny hat they come up with.
You’re probably right about the camera! The new iPhones do have better cameras than some old point-and-shoots. I use mine a lot!
I love apple picking very much.
As well as chocolate.

I am also a big fan of chocolate. π
I’m SO happy you went apple picking, it’s definitely our favourite fall tradition. Looks like a super fun family outing, and I bet Roman loved the train;) Hope you’re feeling well so far, I’ve been thinking about you!

Roman was *obsessed* with every moment of the train. What is it with little boys and trains?? Feeling much better recently, thanks Heidi! π
I tried to convince my kids to go to the pumpkin patch with me. At 15 and 17 they weren’t quite as excited about going as they were when they were 3 and 5 π
Fun photos.

Ha ha ha – I will definitely still be trying to drag my teenagers on family adventures, too. π
I love going apple picking! This year we went Hudson Valley, which wasn’t bad but I preferred the place we went in Westchester last year. It was just so beautiful!
That Roman selfie is too funny!

Some of his photos are hysterical. Fran thinks the one of his toy cat looks like a grown-up photo. I loved apple picking, too!
