Did you know that today is National Popcorn Day? (Did you know there was a day devoted to all things popcorn? Me neither!) It seemed fitting that I’ve been experimenting with making popcorn a little more interesting lately and this weekend I made probably the best decadent snack I’ve had in a long time – Chocolate Peanut Butter Popcorn. It. was. so. good.
It was probably not the healthiest recipe in the world…although, the popcorn is air-popped and it was pretty filling, so I didn’t even finish my portion – that means there is a possibility it’s not as terrible for you as all those yummy words in the title might suggest!
Next time you’re trying to decide between a sweet treat or a savory snack, try this out. It’s super quick to prepare (like 5 minutes), then takes about 30 minutes to set in the fridge. Here’s the recipe:
Chocolate Peanut Butter Popcorn. Three delicious foods combined for one decadent snack! Salty sweet and surprisingly quick and easy to make.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup popcorn kernels
- 1/3 cup bittersweet chocolate chips
- 1/3 cup peanut butter (I used smooth)
- 1 brown paper bag
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- Pour the popcorn kernels into a brown paper bag. Fold the top closed, using small folds (I've found three folds keep it closed).
- Lay the paper bag flat in a microwave and cook on high for 3 minutes.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and peanut butter.
- Microwave on high for about a minute - stir and keep adding 10 seconds on high if the chocolate is not completely melted.
- Spread the popcorn out in a flat layer on wax paper on a cookie sheet.
- Drizzle the melted chocolate and peanut butter over the popcorn with a spoon.
- Sprinkle a little salt over the melted topping.
- Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Remove from fridge, then break up and serve in a bowl.
Easy, yummy and did I mention chocolate? π
Since this recipe is vegetarian, I’m linking up with TinaΒ from Fuel Your Future with Tina Muir and DeborahΒ from Confessions of a Mother Runner for their awesome Meatless Monday recipe round up they host every week. Yes, it’s a snack and yes, it’s sweet, but technically it counts, right?
Go and visit their blogs to get lots of ideas for delicious vegetarian recipes to try out, for Meatless Monday, or any night of the week.
Sweet tooth, or savory?
Have you tried the brown paper bag popcorn trick before?

The hardest thing about this recipe is waiting for it to cool off in the fridge.

My son who professes to “hate” popcorn thought this was delicious. π (who wouldn’t?)
Mmmmm popcorn! I love it. I’d love it this way but it would be too addicting. I just go the classic butter/salt route.

Don’t try it, then, because it’s REALLY yummy! π
YUM!! We love popcorn, and peanut butter, and chocolate!! We have made our own popcorn but usually resort to purchasing it with all the yummy Angie’s flavors (we are Angie’s addicts π ), Popcornapolis, and other popcorns. When making our own we usually make creations we can’t buy or ones we love like pb chocolate, pb, marshmallow, ect.

It simultaneously does and doesn’t surprise me that you’ve done popcorn for dinner! π
Omg this sounds so delicious! I am always making popcorn in my air popper. This would be a great addition to my butter and salt I use on it. I found my new favorite evening snack:)

Popcorn is my favorite food so I can’t believe I didn’t celebrate it last night! Cassidy makes the best stovetop popcorn. Never with PB and chocolate, though. My eyes are about bugging out of my head right now!

This is the perfect combination! I had no idea that it was so easy to make. My kids will love this so we’ll have to add the twist to one of our movie and popcorn nights soon.
