How was your weekend? It’s still definitely marathon season – I’ve been seeing lots of social media updates about running this past weekend. My friend Coop ran the Philadelphia Marathon, just 2 weeks after running New York (this was his 16th marathon). Nicole, who writes Work in Sweats Mama, ran the Richmond Marathon yesterday and set a PR as well as nabbed a BQ! Amazing!
The weather in NYC this weekend was RIDICULOUSLY nice, so you know I took advantage of that to get out for a run.
I went out with no particular goal, no plans to run a certain number of miles, or for any particular time. It was just what I needed. I did wear my Garmin, I just didn’t look at it once while running. I ended up doing 5 easy miles. I probably would have run longer, but my right hamstring felt tight and I didn’t want to push it and get injured.
When I got home, I checked my splits and there was a 3 second difference between my fastest and slowest mile, despite the hills and terrain. Finally, I feel like I’ve mastered keeping a steady pace without having to use a watch, just by listening to my body. So now I have that skill, but I’m training for…. Β NOTHING.
When I ran the marathon in 2010, I ended up with strained adductors in my right hip, which had me on crutches for two weeks, followed by a cane (not my favorite) and then some hobbling. So I never really experienced any post-marathon malaise, because I was immersed in an injury pity party. This time around, I officially feel a little down in the dumps. 16 weeks of training, followed by one of the most memorable experiences of my life, then… that’s it. I know I need to set myself a new goal, so I have something to train towards, I am just finding it difficult to set my sights on a new challenge. Stay tuned!
Luckily, there’s this small dude in my life who makes me feel happy every time I look at him. This weekend we did lots of playing and reading and laughing and exploring. He’s the best.
Also, I know I’m super late to the party, but Fran and I started watching Breaking Bad (probably about a week after it ended). Holy amazing, that show was SO GOOD. And we power watched it too. We did that thing where we’d watch an episode and it was getting kind of late and we’d say, “Do you want to watch another one?” “I don’t know…do you?” while we both knew we were definitely going to watch another episode and be tired the next day. So this Saturday night we opened a bottle of wine for the finale. Neither of us had heard or read any spoilers, happily, and it did NOT disappoint. The wine was delicious, too. π
Don’t worry – Roman wasn’t up watching Breaking Bad with us. He was fast asleep from a long day of playing (complete with assisted inversions!) by the time we were enjoying our grown-up time!
What did you do this weekend? Did anyone run a race? Are you the type of person who needs to have a goal to train towards, or do you prefer to work out simply for the fun of it? And did you watch Breaking Bad and do you agree it was the best show ever??
Oh, I love the pictures of your little man. So adorable! Thanks for the shout-out! You already know how I spent my weekend. You know what the best part of my race was? Seeing my girls cheering for me just after mile 21. Boy, did I need them at that point in the race. I stopped and gave them both sweaty hugs and kisses. It was the best!

Mile 21 is a GREAT place to see some familiar faces! Particularly small, adorable faces! That must have made the last stretch a tiny bit more bearable. I’m so happy for you!
I’m sure you will be able to come up with another goal or something else to focus on soon!! Much better problem than being injured!!!

Yah, I should probably do a little more counting of my blessings! It is much nicer to be able to walk following this one! ha ha
I don’t watch Breaking Bad but my sister and my son do. They got into it late and my son was way ahead of my sister and she’d be like “tell me, no don’t tell me!” It was funny to be in the middle of their conversation.
I haven’t run in a long time but I think I’m going to do so right now. Seriously. Thanks for the mojo!

That’s funny – I am so happy we managed to avoid all spoilers, but I would have been so tempted to find out if someone offered to tell me! Also, it just MADE MY DAY that I motivated you to go for a run! I hope you had an awesome run. π
