Today I’m very excited to have a fellow personal trainer and fellow Aussie on the blog with an awesome guest post of the 5 Best Tips for Setting Goals You’ll Actually Achieve. The writer is Eli King, an inspiring personal trainer based in Brisbane, Australia. Her blog, Eli King Fitness, is full of simple, smart, non-judgmental advice for getting fit and staying that way. Please show the love by leaving Eli a comment!
This time of year for me, is a time of reflection and planning.Β I love to look back at the year just passed and see all that I have accomplished, how I did on the goals I set, and what I could have done better.Β I also LOVE to look forward at the year ahead and think about what I’d like to achieve and how I’d like to feel this time next year.
I love setting goals.Β I set weekly monthly and yearly goals and I review them often.Β It keeps me focused and moving in a direction that I want to go in.Β Sometimes I don’t achieve the goals I set, and sometimes I realize that it isn’t a goal I want to achieve any more.Β This is perfectly normal and shows how you are growing and changing as a person.Β I look on these not as failures, but as teachings to move my life forward in a positive way.
Here are my top 5Β tips for setting goals you will actually achieve:
1.Β Be honest with yourself.Β Sometimes, we are influenced by other people.Β Whether it’s what we think they want us to do, or a suggestion they’ve made.Β Ask yourself if you really and truly want it, or is it someone else’s goal?
2.Β Make the goal as specific as possible.Β So much, that you can almost taste the experience!Β How do you want to feel when you accomplish it, what will your life look like when it happens, and who will be there to share it with you.Β Creating a vision of achieving the goal, makes it much more real.
3.Β Take time to really think about it.Β Don’t just write a list of I wants, really narrow it down to a handful of really awesome goals that are going to make you happy.
4.Β Think about how realistic they are, and how you will make them happen.Β Are they short or long term goals?Β What steps do you need to take to get you from A to B.Β If you want to take a trip to Paris, you need to look at when you can get time off to go, what will the weather be like that time of year, how much money will you need, do you need to learn a little French?Β Having an action plan that you can follow will make it much easier to achieve.
5.Β Look at your goals often.Β I think half the reason we miss our mark on goals, is that we forget about them.Β We don’t give them enough space in our lives to be achieved.Β I keep my list on my phone and I go back over it as often as I can.Β My list is ever changing, with goals I’ve achieved and ones that don’t mean that much to me anymore.Β Keep going back and fine tuning the list.
BONUS TIP!
6.Β TAKE ACTION.Β Goals written on paper will never get done.Β You have to take that step out of your comfort zone and do it.Β If its skydiving or opening your own business or losing 10kg, it won’t happen without effort.Β Take that first step and see where it leads you.

Greetings from another Elly. Great goal advice esp. reviewing the goals from time to time.
Thanks for commenting, Elly!! π xo
Great Name Elly!! Thanks for the comment! Keep working on those goals π
Great tips! Now I “know” two Aussies. I think the first point is critical. As women we often try to please others and “forget” if it’s really what we want or not.

It’s so true – especially as a fitness blogger, it’s easy to read others’ goals and think, “Should I be doing that as well?” I think it’s a great idea to check in with yourself every now and again to make sure you’re on the right path for *you*.
I get the ‘You should run a marathon’ comment all the time, and I have no desire to do it. Yet every so often it sneaks its way into my mind… You just have to stay honest with yourself and celebrate the things you do achieve.

Great tips! I love #1 and #3. Focusing on a handful of goals instead of trying to conquer the world makes it much easier to achieve our goals…and enjoy the process!
