It’s that time of year when everyone starts looking forward to the calendar flipping over to a whole new year, a new number, a fresh start. Whether your 2015 has been magical, or you’ve advised it not to let the door hit it on the way out, a new year feels like a good time to reassess goals, no?
I don’t remember the last time I made any concrete New Year’s resolution kind of goals. While almost every year I have had a specific running goal to work toward (this past year being an exception, since I started it about 6 months pregnant!), when it comes to life goals I’ve just kind of seen what unfolds instead of making plans.
But rather than see if anything simply falls into my lap this year, I’m going to take my own advice for taking action to make opportunity happen. 2016 is the year I’m going to hustle, my friends. And since it always helps to have some accountability, I’m sharing all my goals and plans for the new year with you.
Professional Goals
More freelance writing gigs. I’m going to invest in a couple of courses to refine my pitching skills and start writing for more publications this year.
Restarting my personal training business. I’m not ready to get this going until later in the year, when I’m ready to tearfully let Baby T into the wilds of childcare (attachment issues!), but I want to focus this year on taking certifications and classes to keep myself fresh and inspired for when I do get back into one-on-one training.
Running Goals
Crush the marathon in May. My big fat A goal is to PR. I haven’t come up with a B or C goal yet. 😉 I also have my eye on a half marathon in June, but it won’t be the year of the half, like 2014 was for me.
Start trail running. I’ve had a little taste of it from some easy trails near our new place up here in Vermont and I think it’s something I could really get into.
Get involved with the local running community in Burlington. I want to start volunteering with the local running club, seeing what kind of training groups are out there and running some local races.
Blogging Goals
Launch an online personal training program through the blog. I’ve been working on this a lot in the back end and I’m really excited to offer my programming and training skills to clients who aren’t local to me. Look out for this later in the year!
Restart the Fit Mama Friday series. It won’t be every week – probably bi-monthly instead – but Fit Mama Friday will be back! I’ve missed getting to know inspirational fit mamas (and dads) through the blog series and I can’t wait to feature a whole new group of amazing parents.
Health Goals
Lose this baby weight, baby! I’m kicking off the year by tackling Laura’s 21 Day Reset (check out this post for a discount code if you want to join in!) and I want to keep the healthy eating habits going as I ramp up my mileage to build a base for marathon training.
Sleep more. If you read this blog fairly often, you may know I am like a broken record with wanting to get my sleep habits in check. I stay up way too late working, then I’m up early with the boys. There’s no way I can maintain that when I get into a serious running routine – sleep is such an important component of recovery.
Personal Goals
Become a US citizen! My passport is expiring sooner rather than later so I figured I’d replace it with a shiny new American one, especially as it’s pretty obvious I’m staying put by now, ha!
And now that I’ve written those all out I feel overwhelmed. Maybe this is why I never set New Year’s resolutions. But the best way to achieve goals is to know what you’re ultimately working toward, then set up mini-goals along the way to get there. So that’s what I will do and I’m confident I can make 2016 hugely productive and one of those years I’ll cling to next December… ‘No, please don’t go! Stay another month! A week! Just a few days longer, I’ve loved you so!‘
Are you setting goals for the new year? Is there one goal you are scared to even attempt because it seems out of reach? Any advice for this newbie to resolutions?
I think everyone can use more sleep. I don’t have any current goals in 2016 nor many races planned. I’m going to get thru Goofy challenge then decide what I want to sign up for. It’s so hard to commit to races so far in advance not knowing what your schedule will be.

I know! I’ve only signed up for one because I have no idea how this year is going to pan out.
Great goals…. I love the get involved with a running group and volunteer there. Join a running group was one of my 2015 goals, and it has been essential to my marathon training.

I’m hoping I can find one and see how it works for me! I’ve only been in a running group once and it wasn’t while I was in active training, so I don’t have much experience with them.
That is one lofty list but I have zero doubts about your fulfillment of each and every one!! I hope you really work hard on “getting more sleep” b/c I’m sure it will help move the rest of it along 🙂
Also CRAZY excited for you to run the Burlington/VT City Marathon!!!

Thanks ladycake!! I am getting nervous about the marathon already!!
You go girl! Some great goals here. I might steal a few them for myself – especially the marathon PB thing.

I like this. Goals. Better than resolutions even.
I need to start setting some for myself! I keep having these flashes of ideas. 2015 was a good year, and I have to remember that it’s ok to have two good years in a row. Or three! Onward and upward!

How’s that more sleep thing working for you? I giggled at that one when I woke up this morning to find you had already commented on my post from today. I have full confidence in your ability to absolutely crush every single one of those goals. I can’t wait to follow along on your journey!
Good luck with your goals. I could use more sleep too!

PSssssshaw, who needs sleep? Isn’t that what coffee and sugar are for? As for your other goals–get it girl. I don’t really do goals and resolutions any more–I tend to just end up falling behind. Microgoals, sure, I’ll do that. But I’m trying to do more qualitiative, rather than quantitative aims for myself!
