The weekend started out great, but by Sunday, it was pretty awful. Let’s start with the fun, lovely stuff, shall we?
I started out on a high from our trip to the baby doc this week – we got to see monkey #2 on an ultrasound and he or she is much bigger! With little crossed legs and a nice, strong heartbeat. We have the big mid-pregnancy anatomy scan next week, so we’ll get to see lots more of baby then. (But not the nether regions, we won’t find out what this little one is until it makes its appearance next year).
This little monkey is always good company – look at this smile! You know why he looks like the happiest kid in the world? Because he was walking along the top of the little wall surrounding Prospect Park, so proud of his balance skills. He is a constant reminder to me that you really can find joy and excitement in the everyday.
Then we had a big, big surprise planned for Roman Saturday night. It was actually pretty last minute – I have clients near the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, so one night last week I was walking past there about 9pm on my way home from a training session. Suddenly a crowd of Elsas and Annas of Arrandelle were pouring out of the arena with their parents and I realized it must be Disney’s Frozen on Ice. Some quick googling on my way home found nosebleed seat tickets still available for Saturday evening, so we decided to take Roman as a surprise.
He LOVES that movie. No surprise, right? He occasionally takes a blanket, wraps it around his shoulders and announces he is Princess Elsa (I tried to explain she is actually Queen Elsa, but he didn’t care for my semantics). And Olaf? Forget it, he thinks that snowman is the funniest dude in the world. When we walk past fancy-looking churches, Roman asks me if the princesses live there.
This is one stunned, happy boy. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Roman’s face when Olaf came out was one of the sweetest things I’ve ever seen. He was also pretty excited about the Olaf light-up stick toy thing Fran bought for him.
The show was pretty entertaining, too. Despite Fran admitting he had googled “Do they serve beer at Frozen on Ice Brooklyn” before we left, we both enjoyed it too.
Then, the downer part of the weekend began. Let’s just set aside the NY Rangers loss in a shoot-out to the Penguins Saturday night… We had a vet appointment for one of our kitties, Cassie, on Sunday morning. I was actually going to take her on Friday, but she hid under the couch all day until Roman went down for his nap and there was no way for me to lift the couch & get her out by myself.
Cassie has had a sore left paw for a few days and on Thursday night we realized it was swollen. She doesn’t cry when we touch any part of it, so I was nervous it was a fractured bone or something. Anyway, it turns out – they have no idea. She has no cuts or punctures, there’s no infection, no broken bones, no joint issues. The swelling is some weird liquid the vet said she had never seen before, which is being tested. The possibility of a tumor was mentioned and even more alarmingly, the vet didΒ prepare us for a worst-case scenario of an amputation.
Poor baby! Right now, she’s had an antibiotic shot and is taking pain medication until we find out the pathology on the swelling fluid. I just feel so awful because it’s like having a sick baby – she can’t communicate what’s wrong and we can’t help her as much as we would like.
Β Do you enjoy kid’s events, or are they kind of a labor of love for you?Β
What’s your experience with sick pets?
What a sweetheart, he is loving the frozen on ice! Parents of the Year award coming up! π
Aww, poor little Cassie. I hope she is feeling better soon. We actually had to take our dog, Sadie, to the vet because she has started limping after running/playing ball, etc. Turns out (after a $300 exam and x-ray) that she has a knee issue. Her life is running and playing ball, so it’s hard to make her take it easy!

Poor Sadie! I hope she recovers quickly, Heidi. xo
I love the look of sheer delight on Roman’s face! How fun he got to see Frozen on Ice! Thinking all the best thoughts for Cassie. It’s so hard when pets are sick as they’re family. Our dogs are 15 now and they’ve “taken turns” where I swore it was the end….thankfully they’re still doing well!
I LOVE kids events. It’s so much fun to experience things through their eyes!

Honestly, I had more fun watching his face when the characters came out on the ice. Love seeing his little eyes light up. π We’re trying Cassie on some more antibiotics now, after a second appointment, so I have my fingers crossed.
Sounds like a great weekend. Frozen on uce would be so cool to see, even for adults. So sorry to hear about your cat. Hope she geys better. Having sick animals are awful.

It was pretty impressive to see the acting while skating, I have to say! Having a sick pet is so tough because you can’t really reassure them.
Oh, no – so sorry about your cat. I hope that it turns out to be something minor that will clear up with antibiotics.
Umm…I might have been like Fran on the Frozen event – looking for the beer cart!!! But so very cool that y’all surprised Roman with the show!!!

He found the beer cart, not to worry. π
Soo.. do they serve beer at Frozen on Ice??
What a great surprise! We missed it when it was around here because we were away that weekend. I know it will come back around, though.
And I’m sorry about the cat! Hope the details get more comprehensive. I’ve had sick pets, yes. It’s awful.

Yes, they do, much to Fran’s relief. π
