Working Out at Home – Review and a Giveaway!

Disclaimer: As a Fit Approach and Sweat Pink Ambassador, I received a free two month subscription to Gigabody in exchange for review and giveaway. All opinions are my own.

Sometimes I look back to pre-kids days and envy my past self the ability to just go out and run. Whenever I felt like it. No need to organize childcare, or juggle schedules and timing with my husband. Or just on the spur of the moment head out to the gym to take a class and maybe take my time stretching afterwards, grab coffee on my way home – because there was no one relying on me to be home for a certain time. At least I can say that I took full advantage of that luxury of time when I had it, for sure.

Now? Well, I’ve become the queen of working out at home. On my days when I don’t have childcare, I have a small window of opportunity to get a quick workout in while Roman is napping in the afternoon. I’ve amassed a collection of props to use for my living room workouts – a kettlebell, Swiss ball, medicine ball, weights, resistance bands – and I often just make my workouts up as I go along. (One of the benefits of being a personal trainer!)

If you’re not a personal trainer, though, or you need a little more motivation to get your sweat on at home, online workout sites like Gigabody are a great option. So, what is Gigabody? It’s like an online library of workout classes. There are over 90 classes available in their line up and they range from yoga, to barre, dance, cardio to strength training. If you’re the kind of person who likes doing workout DVDs but can get bored easily, or you’re always looking for a new challenge, this type of online library is great for you – lots of variation available with little hunting around.

What’s great about Gigabody?

  • All the guess work is taken out of the equation for you – you don’t have to come up with your own moves and you’re guided through the workout, so there’s less chance of distractions.
  • You can search quickly for a workout, based on time, equipment necessary (there’s lots of bodyweight options), type of workout, intensity level, or instructor.
  • You can contact any of the instructors via the website if you have questions.
  • It’s easy to try a new style of workout you may not have considered if you were buying separate DVDs.
  • Whenever you log in, your workout stats are available, so you can see what videos you’ve done.
  • There are lots of options for short workouts, which is a bonus – if time is tight enough that you have to work out at home, it’s a plus to have lots of 20 – 30 minute options for a good workout.

Look at me, trying new things! (Turns out I am not as graceful or adept at ballet-style workouts as I may have hoped. I’m putting it all down to pregnancy, of course!)

Β Are there any downsides?

There are a few cons to the service, but not so terrible that you’d think twice about the low subscription cost.

  • There are no prenatal workout options. Obviously this will only concern you if you have your own built-in medicine ball in your mid-section. I was bummed out, though – I’m hoping this is something they’re planning on adding.
  • While over 90 workouts gives you lots of options, you may be more limited if there are certain styles you’re not interested in trying – for example, if you don’t want any of the yogaΒ workouts, then you’re left with a little less than 70 videos to choose from.
  • Gigabody sends you occasional emails to suggest a workout for you, based on what you’ve already done. This could be a pro in your eyes, but I get SO many emails already that it didn’t act as a motivation for me!

Despite not having prenatal yoga options, I was happy to modify the yoga workouts to get around my growing belly!

    1. The yoga videos are great – I’ve been loving those. They have a few short tutorials to really take you through one specific pose, as well, which would be awesome if you’re getting back into yoga. Good luck!

    1. You would LOVE it, Kim! If you don’t win, you should do their free 14 day trial and see what you think.

    1. I thought of you when I was writing this! Between you and Kim, you put my home workouts to shame! Good luck in the contest!

  1. Ugh I only workout at home if I absolutely have to…and today, with the impending snowstorm of doom, is one of those days!! I have to be honest and say that I really don’t like workout videos and I, like you, will just “make up workouts as I go along!” Also, the boys don’t nap anymore so my only chance is to have them watch a movie or Teen Titans while I’m on the bike training or strength training!

    1. No nap – OMG. I guess at least I still have that, even when my sweet little prince is acting like a monster. Trying this out definitely gave me a few new moves (although I can safely say that no ballet-inspired workout is ever going to be my jam – I suck at it and don’t get a good enough workout because I get so confused/uncoordinated!). I’m fine making up my own with strength training, but the yoga videos have been fantastic.

    1. They have some great videos, Lacey – it’s fun to switch things up sometimes! (Great for cross training, too.) Good luck in the contest!

    1. I was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed trying it out! I like the variety and it’s definitely helped me out when I’m stuck at home.

    1. Yes, I tried a few of the barre workouts! Those are definitely something I’d prefer to do in my living room before going to a studio. NYC barre studios are NO JOKE. πŸ˜‰

    1. Awesome! That works perfectly, because you WON the contest! πŸ™‚ I’ve emailed you with instructions to redeem your prize – let me know if you have any questions! Congrats!

    1. I love the gym as well! Sadly, my little guy cries every time he’s been deposited in gym childcare. It got to the point where I felt like I was scarring him for life, so now I’m housebound when I’m SAH all day! πŸ˜‰
