ActivMotion Bar Review and a Workout

Thanks to a certain little monkey’s total refusal to be left in my gym’s childcare, you guys know I am often relegated to at-home workouts during nap time. So when Fit Approach offered me the opportunity to receive and review the ActivMotion Bar, I jumped at the chance. A shiny, new toy to test out? Yes, please.

When it arrived, I realized it was a 6 pound weight and I have to admit, I was a little skeptical that I would get any sort of workout from such a light weight. Before I tried it out, I checked out the ActivMotion website, as well as the DVDs included in the package. When IΒ read descriptionsΒ like, The internal rolling weights create unstable motion that engages mind and muscle to help improve every aspect of your fitnessΒ as well as,Β It strengthens your core and challenges your balance and stability with every movement, and it generates momentum that pulls you in the direction the bar is moving, I was intrigued. Time to test this puppy out.

Those rolling steel weights are no joke. Every movement was that much harder as a result of having to constantly make tiny adjustments to counteract the movement of the bar. Suddenly, 6 pounds didn’t seem so puny.

Here’s my take on theΒ bar:

So, are you ready for the workout? This workout includes a quick warm up and 7Β exercises. As I mentioned in my introduction, you can definitely recreate the workout with a body bar, but it won’t give you the added challenge of accounting for that instability the rolling weights provide. You could do this workout as a circuit, then repeat, or you can do 2 – 3 sets of one exercise shown, then move on to the next.

See if you can spot the moment baby gave me a swift kick to the kidney mid workout. πŸ˜‰

As with any workout, you should use common sense in deciding if this is an appropriate workout for you. When in doubt, check with your doctor before beginning a new exercise program. Remember, I am a personal trainer, but I’m not your personal trainer!

This is definitely a great addition to my at-home workout arsenal! It’s been challenging to use while pregnant – in a good way! – forcing me to use all those stabilization muscles that need all the help they can get while this little one grows bigger and bigger.

You can purchase your own ActivMotion Bar directly through their website. Packages for home use start at $119.95 for the 6 pound bar with two DVDs. The bar comes in five different weights – 6, 8, 10, 15, or 18 pounds.

When was the last time you tried a new piece of workout equipment?

  1. First, I loved the top video! I knew that you were from Australia but I’m not sure I’ve ever heard your voice!!!!
That bar looks pretty awesome. Cool that it comes in various weights.

    1. Yup, this baby is always active! Roman used to sleep when I was working out pregnant with him, so it always takes me by surprise when this one makes itself known!! You’d love the ActivMotion bar – it’d be great for your 45s!!

    1. It is a really good workout! Those rolling weights are no joke- they make it so much tougher!!

  2. You’re right – 6lbs doesn’t sound like a lot but I can’t imagine having to balance the rolling weights at the same time. I haven’t tried new equipment in a long time – I really just use free weights and my yoga mat, though I really want a new mat as mine is getting pretty dingy!

    1. It was so fun to try out because I would have assumed it was just like a body bar, but the instability really amps up the workout!!
